Raising The Efficiency Stakes

The unified BC Green Building Code will be introduced on April 4, 2008. With the highest energy efficiency standards in Canada, it includes the mandatory minimum furnace efficiency requirement for new construction only that was recently introduced by the BC Ministry of Energy. The enforcement of this regulation begins on April 4 in order to allow implementation with new standards for building construction in British Columbia under the new code. An ENERGY STAR logo is also required on all products affected by the legislation. The Ministry indicated that they plan to extend the furnace regulation on retrofits in existing buildings with an effective date of December 31, 2009. This allows gas/propane furnaces under 90 per cent AFUE to be sold in the province in retrofit applications at this time. A proposal has also been submitted by the Ministry for the BC Tax Policy Branch to extend the provincial sales tax exemption for Energy Star-qualified furnaces to December 31, 2009
